Eastern White Pine
Each Contemporary Mantel is handcrafted by skilled American craftspeople using carefully selected furniture-grade pine chosen for their durability, strength, and beautiful natural grain.
All of our Pine wood comes from The Pine State of Maine, known for the highest quality White Pine in the United States..
Eastern white pine from Maine is famous for its high quality because the state's cool climate and rich, well-drained soils allow the trees to grow straight, tall, and with tight, uniform growth rings.
Maine pine is prized for its:
Straight Grain: Maine’s dense forest stands force trees to grow upward quickly for sunlight, resulting in straight, clear timber with very few knots.
Sustainably Managed: Generations of localized forestry practices in Maine have optimized the sustainable growth and harvesting.
Contemporary Fireplace Mantel – Construction Specifications
Every URBANDI Contemporary Fireplace Mantel is handcrafted and assembled at our manufacturing facility in Cincinnati, Ohio. From carefully selected solid pine boards to reinforced internal construction, every detail is designed to deliver natural beauty, structural integrity, and long-lasting durability.
Our mantel construction focuses on six key elements:
1. Contemporary Mantel Design
Our Contemporary Fireplace Mantel is one of our most popular designs, featuring clean lines, natural wood character, and a timeless appearance.
Designed to complement our Modern Floating Shelves and furniture collections, this mantel brings a cohesive look to modern farmhouse and contemporary interiors.
2. External Construction – Five Solid Pine Components
Each Contemporary mantel is constructed using five exterior solid pine boards, carefully assembled to create a seamless hollow-box design.
The five components include:
Front Face: The visible front panel of the fireplace mantel, glued and secured to the mantel body.
Top Panel: The upper horizontal surface, joined to the end panels using precision-cut miter joints.
Bottom Panel: The lower horizontal surface, also connected to the end panels using miter joints.
Right End Panel: Closes the right side of the mantel and connects to the top and bottom panels through miter joints.
Left End Panel: Closes the left side of the mantel and connects to the top and bottom panels through miter joints.
This construction creates the substantial appearance of a solid wood beam while reducing overall weight for easier handling and installation.
3. Internal Reinforcement – Built for Structural Integrity
Each Contemporary Mantel includes a minimum of four internal wood supports, strategically positioned to reinforce the hollow-box construction.
These supports help maintain the mantel's shape, improve structural stability, and support long-term durability.
4. Concealed French Cleat Mounting System
Every URBANDI Contemporary Fireplace Mantel includes a concealed solid wood French cleat mounting system, designed to provide secure wall attachment while maintaining a clean, floating appearance.
Our standard French cleat lengths range from 30 to 48 inches, depending on the mantel size. The shortest 30-inch cleat is used for our 36-inch fireplace mantels.
The mounting system is designed to accommodate installation into two or three wall studs, depending on stud spacing, cleat length, and mounting configuration.
Once installed, the concealed French cleat provides reliable support without visible mounting hardware, preserving the mantel's seamless floating appearance.
5. Weight Capacity – Up to 120 Pounds
URBANDI Contemporary Fireplace Mantels are designed to support decorative items, framed photographs, seasonal decorations, and other everyday fireplace displays.
When properly installed into three structurally sound wall studs using appropriate mounting hardware, the mantel can support up to 120 pounds of additional weight placed on top of the mantel.
This 120-pound capacity refers to the weight of displayed items and does not include the weight of the mantel itself.
Actual load capacity depends on proper installation, wall construction, mounting hardware, and secure attachment to structural supports.
6. Protective Finish – Beauty and Durability
Each Contemporary Mantel undergoes a two-step finishing process:
Wood Finish: A carefully applied finish enhances the natural character of Eastern White Pine and creates the selected color.
Protective Clear Coat: A protective topcoat helps preserve the finish, maintain color consistency, and protect the wood surface during everyday use.
The result is a handcrafted solid wood Contemporary Mantel designed to combine natural beauty, functional performance, and lasting quality.
Urbandi Built-To-Order Process - 8 Steps
Once you place your online order, what happens next?
Your Contemporary Mantel order moves into our production schedule the same day your order is placed, and your URBANDI solid wood furniture goes into production the next day.
Since we control our entire process onsite and locally source our materials, we can focus on the finer details of our quality process. Each step to crafting each Contemporary Mantel order starts with American wood.
HAND SELECT WOOD - Your wood is hand selected for the best quality, character and charm.
CUTTING - It sounds simple, but precision is key to meet your exact specifications.
ASSEMBLY - Since we allow for the proper amount of curing time, this step takes 5 hours.
REFINING - While many imperfections are actually part of the unique character of each piece of wood, some imperfections are flaws. So we go to additional steps to correct them.
SANDING - This is a two step process starting with automation followed by hand sanding to ensure your solid wood piece is just right.
FINISHING - Your piece comes to life with staining and finishing to ensure just the right look.
PACK & SHIP - The last step in our Build-To-Order sustainable process, is hand packing your personalized order. To ensure your order arrives safety and in a timely manner, we use UPS and FedEx.
RECYCLING - Through our Build-To-Order 7-step sustainable process, over 75% of our waste is recycled or repurposed. This includes working with local farmers who use our wood shavings for their barns and stables.
This entire Built-To-Order process for your Contemporary Mantel can range from three to five days depending on the product. For our Urbandi Expedited service, we shorten that process to 24 hours.
Our goal is to create and deliver the highest quality, solid wood, personalized mantel that will complement and elevate your space.
And there is one more step, which is the most important of all. Your URBANDI Experience.

Urbandi's Contemporary Mantel is designed to meet industry and safety standards.
Always refer to the safety standards defined you your State of Residence. For example, under the Residential Code of Ohio (based on the International Residential Code standards), combustible fireplace mantels and trim must follow strict placement and projection rules:
Distance from Fireplace Opening: Exposed combustible mantels or trim must be placed at least 6 inches (152 mm) away from the top and sides of the fireplace opening.
Projection Limits (Within 12 Inches): Any combustible material or mantel located within 12 inches (305 mm) of the fireplace opening cannot project outward more than 1/8 inch (3 mm) for every 1 inch (25 mm) of distance measured from the opening.
Example: If a mantel is positioned 7 inches above the opening (5 inches away from the 12-inch threshold), it can only project outward by a maximum of 5/8 of an inch.
General Clearance Rule: Wood structural members and mantels must be installed so they do not overheat or catch sparks and embers from the fire.
Manufacturer Exceptions: If you are using a prefabricated or UL 127-listed/labeled fireplace unit, always defer to the manufacturer's specific installation instructions, which may supersede general code or allow different clearances.

Every Urbandi product is made in Cincinnati, Ohio by our team of skilled craftspeople.
Are Urbandi products hand made?
Yes. Every Urbandi piece is made through a hands-on build-to-order process. We use modern tools for precision, but the majority of the work is guided by skilled craftspeople who select, cut, assemble, sand, finish, pack, and inspect each piece with care.
Are Urbandi products made from real wood?
Yes. Urbandi products are made from real solid wood, not MDF, particle board, or cheap veneer. Some pieces, such as certain fireplace mantels, use a hollow solid-wood construction to make installation easier and pricing more accessible while still maintaining real wood quality.
Can Urbandi products be used outside?
Most Urbandi products are designed for indoor use, where temperature and humidity are controlled. Outdoor pieces may be available as custom orders using materials and finishes suited for exterior conditions. Contact our team to discuss your project.
How much weight can Urbandi shelves hold?
Weight capacity depends on shelf size, depth, bracket type, and installation method. On average, floating shelves installed into wall studs with the included brackets can hold 25–55 pounds per stud. Longer or deeper shelves may need additional support brackets.
How do I care for real wood?
Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Wipe spills right away with a slightly damp cloth, then dry thoroughly. Avoid harsh cleaners, abrasive pads, and silicone-based products. Keep real wood away from extreme heat, direct sunlight, and excessive humidity.
How do you choose your raw material suppliers?
We choose suppliers based on material quality, consistency, responsibility, and proximity. For hardwoods, we work with mills in Central Appalachia and trusted regional partners who provide strong, beautiful wood suited for long-lasting furniture and shelving.
Because stains available did not fit my color scheme, I bought unfinished and stained it Special Walnut w two coats of polyurethane. I think it looks great ! Urbandi might consider offering this stain color due to today’s medium wood trends. It all came together great. Julia in customer service is very helpful
I just unboxed
Mantel will be installed the week of July 20
I can’t wait to send you before and after pictures.
UPDATE:
Mantle along with new tile installed and I am thrilled, it’s beautiful and exactly like I imagined it to be. next up painting the entire downstairs and new window coverings. Will send more pics when room is all done
This mantle Iooks nothing like the photo. There are absolutely no marks of being rustic. But we had to wait so long due to orders being backed up we just put it up. I thought it would grow on me.
Love my new Mantle. Urbandi was a great company to work with. Quality construction, fair pricing and EXCELLENT customer service is exactly (as an interior designer) I will be a return customer. Great Job and Thank you! Customer for life!
I'm in love with my mantel! The day after I made the purchase I got an email that it was going into production and 11 days later it was at my doorstep. I wish I could share the experience of hanging it but I hired someone to do it and since I didn't hear any complaints, I assume all went smoothly. The mantel was exactly as I pictured it and I always love it when I'm able to buy products made in the U.S.A. I highly recommend this company.
Very pleased with this mantel. Excellent quality and easy to install. Very true to the description and love the stain color. Easy to order, great updates along the way as the mantel was being assembled. love it!!
Mantle is being returned. Looked nothing like the advertised picture. The mantle we received was clear wood, no knots, in golden oak color, and the distressed look consisted of someone chipping out a few sections of the mantle.
The mantel arrived very quickly and is a perfect match to our floors. It was super easy to install and even came with a touch up kit (which we haven’t needed). The workmanship is great!!
I really wanted to love this. The color is significantly lighter than the photos online and it does not look distressed as advertised. Very much looks like a plank of wood you could get at Home Depot with a couple of man-made dents. There’s one small natural knot on one of the wood pieces. Other than that it looks like a standard sheet of wood. If I hadn’t already threw away the box, I would try to start the return process. Bummer.
We love our new mantle, even thoughI haven't had time yet to really spruce it up with a with a painting and some decoration to make it gorgeous. Our fireplace was an old red brick fireplace that was very drab and old. This mantle updated our whole living room. It's made very well with beautiful grain and beautiful finish. We were 100% satisfied with our purchase.
I was very excited for this to arrive so I could complete my new fireplace surround. Unfortunately, what arrived was no where near the quality I expected at this price point and for something hand made to boot. I'm surprised by all of the positive reviews on here unless I'm literally the only one who had all of these QC issues:
1) The color is WAY lighter than online. It's not due to a difference between online and in person. Its because this piece doesn't even appear to be stained. I know what aged oak stain looks like, and this ain't it. It has a matte finish on it but she got no stain.
2) this isn't a rustic finish. Save for 3 notches on the top edge that look like they were made with a machine because they are precisely the same size (except the one large notch that is obviously damage and not part of the look given how the wood is split there), and equidistant apart. Also, the edges are sharp and crisp and haven't been sanded to even try and give it an aged rustic look.
3) It wasnt even finished. What do I mean by this? Usually you will finish a piece and fill/cover your work. Here they couldnt have been bothered to fill in the holes from the Brad nails used to join the pine boards. They said it would take time to ship since each one is made by hand so why couldnt it even been finished?
What you get as a result of all of this is a sloppy piece that looks like what it is - a pine box - instead of a crafted piece of woodwork that looks like a rustic oak mantle piece.
I paid more for something that this company very proudly states is hand crafted and what I got was a C grade piece from a high school woodshop class.
Maybe this is a one off, we'll see what happens and how difficult it is to exchange for something that at least resembles what I ordered. If it can be made right, I'll update my review.
